Sweet Potato Fries with Toasted Marshmallow Dip

sweet potato fries with toasted marshmallow dip recipe

I cannot take credit for this one, there is a really good burger place in Lawrence, Kansas called The Burger Stand. They have a condiment station that rivals any I have ever seen. All of the condiments are homemade, and all incredible. They are served in big metal pump containers, and I got samples of each one. I thought that one of them was ranch or mayo, (which I don't eat - I have a strong dislike for mayo) you can imagine my surprise when Wes told me that it was sweet. He promised me that … [Read more...]

Black Bean Cakes with Corn Salsa and Avocado Sauce

black bean cakes with corn salsa and avocado sauce recipe

I would have no problem becoming a vegetarian. I could easily give up meat, and live on salads, but I do not think that my family would go along with me. My boys are meat eaters. Hamburgers, steaks, pulled pork, they are their favorites. That being said, when I put a plate of black bean cakes in front of them, they look at me funny, but the plate is always clean. I love this version because they are so flavorful. a little kick from chipotle pepper and chile powders, but they are not hot. Nice … [Read more...]

Baked Chili Cheese Fries with Bacon and Ranch

baked chili cheese fries with bacon and ranch dressing recipe

I am not even going to bother with chit chat. Let's just talk about these fries. They are insane. Beyond what I could have ever expected in a French fry. Heaven in a cast iron skillet. Amazing. These might even edge out my love for these babies. Of all of the things in Joy the Baker's new cookbook, it surprised me that this was the first thing that I chose to make. Let's be honest, I am more of a sweet than a savory. If you read this blog regularly, you might have gotten a sense that I have a … [Read more...]

When I think back to how I learned to love food and cook, I often am reminded of working at a restaurant called The Hatteras. It is no longer there, but when it was, it was before its time. The menu changed seasonally, the meats, seafood, and produce were sourced as locally as possible. The restaurant had its quirks for sure, but one thing was always true - the food was spectacular. In the winters when it was slow, the chef would let me work behind the line, and would teach me how to make some … [Read more...]

Jack’s Urban Fries

jacks urban fries recipe

When I was pregnant with my youngest son, I ate Urban Fries from Jack's Urban Eats in Sacramento probably once a week. Urban Fries are french fries topped with blue cheese dressing, hot chili oil, red pepper flakes, and lots of chopped parsley. Admittedly, it is a strange combination, but I promise you, they are crave-worthy. I was so sick when I was pregnant, I would be sick 8-9 times a day until the day I delivered. I was not a happy girl, to say the least. It is counter-intuitive, but the … [Read more...]
