Valentine’s Day is this weekend. I happen to really love Valentine’s Day. My mom always made it really special when we were kids and I like to do the same for my kids. They love bringing treats to their classmates and I really enjoy the time that we spend making them. (Sort of like my Christmas card tradition.) This year I found an adorable idea (and printable!) on the Migonis Home blog. It is incredibly simple to make, and I love that it is not food related. I get a little nervous bringing food to school sometimes because of food allergies. I’m really cautious about it, but just the same it makes me anxious. I would never want someone to get sick on my watch.

And they get so many treats that day, that I feel like that my fellow mom friends might appreciate a non-sugary Valentine. When I found this idea a few weeks ago, I knew that it would be perfect for both classes (4th and 2nd – sadly my 6th grader doesn’t do Valentines anymore) and that it would be an easy thing for them to assemble on their own. I also would rather spend a little more on something that is less likely to get thrown away (I’m guilty of tossing a lot of the candy that comes home). All said and done, it took less than 30 minutes for us to get our Valentines ready for school and delivery. Ava and Clay love these and I am sure that their friends will too.

What you need:

Instructions:

  • Pick a card, have your kid write the receiver’s name on the card
  • If you are using white cards I suggest you let your kid draw or color the card a bit – the result will be…. interesting! 🙂 but surely more authentic and less boring than a plain white card!
  • Pair each watercolor palette with a card
  • With the help of the washi tape, fix each card on top of the watercolor palette (use the scissors to cut the tape – it’ll avoid it getting ruined)
  • Add stickers!
  • You are done!!

Here’s a little time-lapse we made of making our Valentine’s.

Some more cute and easy non-food kid Valentines that I found in FamilyFun Magazine.

Here are the instructions:

YO-YO // Print the template onto 8½-by-11-inch sticker paper (at office-supply stores), and have your child trim it out using pinking shears. Stick it onto the yo-yo, and you’re good to go!

ZOO ANIMALS // Print greeting onto card stock; cut out. Trim a piece of sushi grass (we found ours on amazon.com) to the width of the card. Insert the greeting, grass, and zoo animal into a cellophane bag; tape it closed.

PLAYING CARDS // Print the template onto 8½-by-11-inch sticker paper; cut out. Wrap a box of cards once with washi tape, then stick the greeting onto the box.

PAINT PALETTES // Help your child splatter card stock with watercolors; let dry. (Practice on a test template first.) Print greetings onto the painted card stock and cut out. Punch holes in each, then attach the tags to the paint sets with string.

JACKS SET  // Insert scrap cardboard into a small muslin bag (we found ours on papermart.com). Help your child stamp a heart onto the bag; let dry. Print the greeting; cut out and insert into the bag, along with a jacks set.

CRAYONS & NOTEPADS // Place crayons on top of a notepad and wrap with a rubber band. Print the template onto plain paper; cut out. Wrap it around the bundle and tape in place in the back.

PARACHUTER // Print greeting onto cloud-patterned paper (we found ours at officesupply.com); cut out. Adhere paper to card stock with a glue stick. Attach parachuter with a glue dot.

SILLY GLASSES  // Print the greetings onto card stock; cut out. Use double-stick tape to attach the glasses onto the card stock, or punch holes for each of the temple pieces, thread them through, and fold closed.
