How to Hard Boil an Egg?

Dear Internet,

It is time to dye Easter eggs and every year, I have the same problem.  What is the best way to hard boil an egg?  There are so many ways to do it, what method do you use?

Discuss.

Thank you for all of the responses.  Isn’t it amazing how many different ways that people hard boil eggs?  I ended up starting my eggs in a pot of cold water, bringing it to a hard boil, turning off the heat, and letting them sit for 15 minutes.  I ran them under cold water and when they were cold enough to handle I cut one open and they were in fact perfectly hard boiled.  Perfect for this:

I put the eggs in a pot in cold water, then bring it to a boil and turn it off. Cover and let them sit for about 15 minutes. Works for me! Good luck!

I’m so curious to see what other’s have to say on this. I had to ‘google’ it a while back because I had to clue. So what I do now, is put the eggs in the water and bring to a boil for 15-20 minutes (I actually can’t remember now…) and then I put them in ice water for 10… or maybe not… darn. I’m not sure… but it’s something like that…

Put all the eggs in a pan with enough water to cover by an inch. Put a lid on the pan and bring it to a boil. When its at a boil take the lid off the pan and set a timer for 20 min. At the end of the 20 min dump the hot water and refill with cool then cold water several times, finishing by dumping some ice cubes in with the last set of water. Makes for easy peeling and no funny grey stuff around the yolks.

  4. ok…so I’m not very good at it, but my aunt told me to put the eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, put the top on the pan and take it off of the burner. set the timer for 20 minutes and then rinse the eggs in cold water and refrigerate. seems to work well for me…

I Ditto Brenda, I let them boil 1 min, then cover and remove from heat… Works great every time. And the cold water bath stops that gray ring around the yolk.

I bring the water to a boil, carefully add the eggs, boil for 15 minutes, then remove from heat and replace the water with ice water. We had some of the eggs today, so I’m current on my technique. =)

  7. this is how you boil a perfect egg:
put eggs in cold water and bring to a boil. as soon as it comes to a boil, put a lid on it and pull it off of the heat. let it sit for 10 minutes. no more no less. run under cold water, peel, and congratulations– you have a perfect hard boiled egg, just cooked with no grey around the yolk.

I do the same as above, but i let it sit in the hot water for about 15 minutes. Try testing out one egg first. If it turns out how you like it, stay with that method for the rest of the eggs. Good luck!

Thank you for all of the ways to hard boil an egg. I will see how it goes this Easter. Seems like the cold water, bring to boil, lid, 10 minute rest seems to be the winnner.

I use the Cooks Illustrated method and it works without fail everytime. No blue yolks either – just beautiful golden yellow yolks.

Put the eggs in cool water – not especially cold just what comes out of the tap. Bring to a boil with lid off using moderate to almost high heat. Once comes to a boil, cover and remove from heat and let sit 10 min then remove from heat and run under cool water.

I think only Elizabeth and I boil the water first, then add the eggs, and boil eggs for 15 min!

Thanks! This may be the first batch of hard boiled eggs I’ve ever boiled that had no fatalities. This was so easy that I may even retire my hard boiled egg machine that I’ve always loved so much.
