Today you are hopefully spending the day celebrating our country’s Independence with family and friends. We are going to be poolside, and watching the fireworks from my husband’s office. One of the perks in working in a high rise near the capital.
One of the other perks of where we live is getting to be tourists in our new hometown. We don’t get to live any place for too long, so we like to do as much as possible to get to know our new city. Adventures are what we live for. We like to get up and get in the car and see something that we have never seen before. A few weeks ago, I was on a trip to the Sabra Hummus headquarters in Richmond, VA. I fell in love with Richmond. I went to one of the most beautiful art museums I have ever been to, and ate at some delicious restaurants. It is only a little more than an an hour and a half from us, and I wanted to take my family back to explore.
My little guy is really into animals and nature, so I knew that he would love to see the Butterfly Live! exhibit at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. I really had no idea how beautiful the gardens would be. The children’s garden is so sweet. There is a beautiful tree house overlooking the lake, an outdoor checker board, and they can even play drums made out of logs. Next time, we will bring their suits so they can play in the splash park. We had a nice lunch in the cafe, and had one of the nicest afternoons. We even became members so that have a reason to go back.
I love taking pictures of food. It is so different than anything I have ever done before, and challenges me all the time. As much as I love it, it is now what I do and it can feel like work sometimes. I take pictures of my children all the time – I have captured so many memories on my iPhone, and I love how easy it is. I have my phone on me all the time, and well, taking iPhone pictures is just fun. Instagram has changed the way I communicate with people, and I love being a part of it. That being said, I think that I don’t push myself creatively like I did when I only shot with my camera. Creativity is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. I got lazy. I stopped even taking my big camera on adventures with us. I stopped feeling creative. How do you break out of a creative funk? For me, it means using my muscle. The more I shoot, the better I get, the better I get, the more I want to do it.
I am very fortunate to have a very nice camera. While a camera does not a photographer make, it does help to have some quality tools. When I am needing to change it up, one of the easiest ways is to brush off a dusty lens from the bottom of my camera bag, and use something that I do not use all the time. Lensbaby contacted me and asked me if I would be interested in trying one of their lenses. How did they know? I jumped at the chance. I am a big Lensbaby fan, and already had an older version of the Composer. I was given a Composer Pro with Sweet 35 Optic to help break me out of my funk.
Did it work? Yup. The Composer Pro creates a dreamy, ethereal, look. You pick the focus point, and the lens creates almost a glow around the subject. The best part is that you can swap out the optics and create a new look. There are also different kits that you can add, like a macro or wide angle. I love that it is so lightweight. As we were leaving to go to the garden, I tossed it into my bag and I am so happy that I did. I had such a good time shooting that afternoon.
Disclosure – I was given a Composer Pro with Sweet 35 Optic to review. All opinions are 100% my own.
