food photography lighting set up

I shoot with a Nikon D700.  Lately I have been shooting primarily with my 24-70 2.8, but also use a 50mm 1.4 and a 105mm 2.8 macro.  I am fickle, what can I say?

I use 99.9% available light.  The occasional reflector and some Photoshop and Lightroom if needed.

Have any photography questions?  I would love to try and answer them.

Hey Bree! I love your photography. It really inspires me to get out there and shoot! I also wanted to let you know that the links to Bree Hester Photography gave me a 500 Internal Server Error. I did find breehester.com, though. Amazing photos.

Hi Bree,

I love to take pictures and have a great camera. I’ve yet to take a class to use it in manual and usually take auto pics. I’ve had some great success, but want to expand my techniques. Is there anything you can recommend? Books, classes? Which way do I go. I love your pictures!!

I love your blog too – just recommended it to about 35 of my FB friends! :-)

Oh my goodness, I’m so glad I found your blog! I was on youtube trying to figure out how to Photoshop pictures of food in Lightroom, and your video was the first to show. It was very helpful, thank you very much for giving such great advice to new food bloggers and aspiring food photographers, such as myself.

Right now I am shooting my pictures with a regular old normal camera, so for my last few blog entries I’ve been learning how to use Lightroom to make them a little better. I’m still learning about which props to use, where the best light is in my house, and all that good stuff. Hopefully in January I will be getting a new camera, either a Nikon like you, or a Canon Rebel.

Anyways, thanks for the help!! Love your blog :)

Here is a question.. Portability and set up of your light boards. If you work as a cook and are In a time constraint and not totally in control of the sunlight. What methods of a quick setup and best shots would you recommend to master first. What colors are better than others, and what is your favorite method of lugging around your camera gear?

Thanks a great pictures by the way

bakedbree January 10, 2011 at 9:17 pm

Find a really good spot in your house that has even and consistent light. Pay attention to the time of day that gets the best light. My kitchen has perfect light from about 11 to 3. I tend to cook and shoot the most then. Colors… trial and error, but I really like shooting with white. Keep your set ups simple and let the food be the focus. I do not use a lot of gear, so I don’t have a lot to lug. If you have any specific questions, please send me an email. bree at baked bree dot com

Love your site!!! I am getting into Photography more and more. I have a Nikon D7000…and have been using the 50 mm 1.4 lens…do you have any good tips for using it? My focus has been a little off with taking pics of my 17 month old….also wondered if you could recommend any good sites for some Lightroom PResets??

Reply

bakedbree February 5, 2011 at 4:26 pm

Thank you Beth! I love that lens. Do you toggle your focal points? That really helps and practice. I do not use a lot of presets in LR, but I like the ones from Totally Rad Actions.

Hi Bree, Is there a good SLR camera (reasonably priced) that you could recommend for someone just starting off? I am interested in purchasing one but with there being so many options I don’t know where to start. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

bakedbree February 27, 2011 at 6:58 pm

I think that you need go to camera store and try out a bunch and see what you like and how it feels in your hands. I will say that I am partial to Nikons. :)

Fabulous photos! I love seeing how other people set up their food photography, especially since I’m still learning. I’ve been meaning to buy a foam light bounce board for a while now and you might have just pushed me to get it FINALLY this weekend :) Love the site!

I hope you bought some foam core. A really inexpensive fix for a common problem.

Jenn June 15, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Bree, where do you get that white board that you use for the base (from the photo on this page). The board with the ridges?

Reply

bakedbree June 16, 2011 at 12:49 pm

It is wainscotting leftover from my daughter’s bedroom. You can get it in pack from Home Depot kind of places.

Reply

bakedbree June 16, 2011 at 12:52 pm

I also paint it every now and again, I just use white spray paint. They piece together and can get banged up, I would glue a few pieces together.

Bree, Wow. I want to be you when I grow up. Really, your photos are beautiful and make the food seem almost to jump off my screen. I can almost smell them. Thank you for sharing your tips. I am just starting to understand the D80 my husband bought years ago. I have never really switched it off auto. I’m ready to take the plunge and I’m going to get the book you recommended to the other reader. I also wondered if you have a recommendation for an easy way to learn photoshop? I have stumbled around with the program (and I’m pretty sure I would be considered a moderate techie) but I can’t seem to grasp the setup to move forward. Any website, book or magazine suggestions would be great.

I’m off to pin some more of your recipes I’d like to make!!

Thank you Aimee. That is very nice of you to say. Photoshop… not the most intuitive program around is it? I like the Scott Kelby books, but I am more of a learner by seeing. MCP Actions has some great online classes that you might find helpful.

I also use the Michelle Kane Photography Actions for almost every single picture that I post.

I hope that helps! If you ever need anything, shoot me an email and I will try my hardest to help you.

Hi Bree, love your site! I was wondering where you find your backgrounds, and also your gorgeous dishes? Do you have a favorite cookbook or a few? I would love to know where you find recipes besides online! Also, someday you should post some blogging tips. How do you always have recipes to post? Last thing, who designed your blog and who did you have host it when you were first beginning? Thanks for answering!

All over the place. I find things everywhere. I find recipes all over, magazines, cookbooks, cooking shows. I designed my blog and godaddy hosted me when I first started. I am about to move to Synthesis.
