I know that I usually post recipes that I have made or the occasional update on my garden, but I cannot let another day go by without telling you about this sundae. So a few months ago, before we turned off our cable, I was watching The Best Thing I Ever Ate. It was the ice cream episode. Aida Mollenkamp was describing a sundae that came from Bi-Rite Creamery in San Francisco. It sounded really weird but who am I to judge a weird treat that someone else loves? Fast forward a few months and I was reading a cute blog called A Little Yumminess that is all about taking your children on food adventures. They live in the San Francisco Bay Area and since San Fran is one of my favorite places, I had bookmarked this cute website. They have lists of their favorite places and favorite things to eat (not to mention some great recipes) and Bi-Rite Creamery was on it. We were so there. On Sunday, we were meeting some friends for dinner in Alameda so I decided that it was the day that I was going to go to Bi-Rite Creamery. The line was around the block when we got there. I knew I was in for a treat.
So what is it that I have been thinking about non-stop since I ate it? Sam’s Sundae. Now, I am making a disclaimer. It sounds weird. Unappealing even. I don’t even like chocolate ice cream. I have NEVER ordered chocolate ice cream at an ice cream shop before. But have faith. I would never lead you wrong. Sam’s Sundae is an organic chocolate ice cream, with organic bermagot olive oil (weird, I know!) Maldron sea salt sprinkled on top with slightly sweet freshly whipped cream. It is one of the most heavenly things that I have ever put in my mouth. The chocolate is rich and creamy, the olive oil is flowery and orange scented, the salt brings out all of the flavors in the chocolate and oil, and the cream just sends it over the top. I do not know who Sam is but I want to thank him or her very, very much.
