I just spent the last 3 hours on the couch sobbing while watching The Blind Side. I love that movie, and it gets me every time I see it. I am always amazed at how a split second decision to turn a car around changed the lives of so many people. How a simple act of kindness can have a genuine impact on your spirit. And the truly powerful relationship between mother and child, whether that child comes from you or not. I seem to have a weak spot for feel-good football movies, because Remember the Titans is another movie that I have to watch when I stumble upon it while flipping channels.
Lately, I have been spending a lot of time away from my kitchen. The weather has gotten nicer, and we are spending our free time outdoors. This week was Spring Break for everyone, my husband included, an unexpected trip for him changed all of our plans, add in some terrible weather, and lets just say, I took a much needed break from my kitchen. I did not take a break from doctors appointments, cuddling on the couch, trips to the movies, dental emergencies, spending lots of time in the car, or planning our upcoming move. So why am I telling you this? Because I have no recipes to share with you right now. I usually have a few backups for instances like this, but in all honesty, I am really not happy with the photographs, so I decided to trash them. Which leads me to tho installment of Things I am Loving…
1. Daisy’s Coconut Cake from Daisy Cakes – You know that I love to bake, and in most cases, I always bake from scratch. But why bother when you can have a homemade cake sent to your house? The nice people at Daisy Cakes wrote to me and asked if I would be interested in sampling one of their cakes, and I jumped at the chance, I cannot say no to coconut cake. This cake is moist and flavorful, and comes in the cutest pink tin. I will for sure be ordering this cake again, and I very well may replace my usual Easter flower order with a coconut cake for friends and family. The next one for me to try? The Caramelicious.
2. Visual Supply Co. – I am a creature of habit when it comes to the processing of my images. I use the same tools and techniques for 99% of my images. I shoot in RAW, do a few tweaks, then run a quick action from Michelle Kane to add a little pop and sharpness. But for my personal work, I sometimes get bored and like to change things up. I love film, and everything about film. It looks different, it feels different. Film photography is a chemical process and digital photography is an electrical one. My photography journey started shooting film (a lifetime ago in college), but life does not allow me to shoot film anymore. These ACR presets from Visual Supply Co. are the closest thing that I have seen to digital looking like film. These presets are gorgeous. With a few clicks of my mouse, I got seriously beautiful richness and grain. I know that the picture is small, but take a look at their sample images. Which leads me to my next item…
3. Picture Black and White – I am a color shooter. I can go months without converting an image to black and white. When I saw that Tracey Clark’s next Picture Series class was black and white, I knew that I needed to push myself to do it. Getting out of my comfort zone is a good thing, and I am a huge fan of her Picture classes. I have done all but one now, and it really helps me push myself creatively and see life differently, even if it is just for a little while.
4, Martha Stewart Home Office – You know how much I love Martha. I know that she is a polarizing character, but I happen to adore her. Mix my love of Martha, office supplies (I have never met a stationary store I haven’t liked), and the color turquoise, and well, we have a serious problem. I had to tear myself away from Martha aisle in Staples.
5. Sweet! Baking Supply – We made a trip to Lawrence today just so that I could restock my sprinkle drawer. I had used the last of all of my cute cupcake liners and sprinkles, but we have averted a cupcake crisis. Seriously, Sweet! is the cutest store, and the people there are really nice. They also have an online shop. Just in case you might have a sprinkle problem too.
And you have got to love a store that closes early for a basketball game. Go Jayhawks!
