One of the highlights of my year is always our annual Back to School dinner. It is tradition that started when I was a child and one that I love to continue with my own children. The night before a new school year, we take early baths and get our backpacks ready for the big day. I make a special dinner and always something fancy for dessert. I set the table with candles and flowers and we sit down to celebrate the upcoming year. 4th grade for Will, 2nd for Ava, and kindergarten for Clay.
This year, sending the kids to school took on a new meaning for me. For the first time, all of my children will be in school all day. After years and years of taking care of babies and carpools and diapers, it is time to refocus on myself. Please do not think that I did not love being home with them. I did, it was a blessing, I would not trade my time at home with them for the world. But I am ready to rediscover who I am. What do I want to do with the rest of my life?
I don’t have all of the answers just yet as to what life is going to look like for me, but I am excited about what the future holds.
Spaghetti and meatballs has become the dinner that the kids always request. I was watching an episode of Giada, and she made it into bird nests and I thought that it was adorable. The kids loved these. I put some school supplies in mason jars as table decorations, really easy, but it looked cute. I bought the kids some new books and wrapped them, and used them as the centerpiece. We read our new stories and tucked everyone in to get lots of rest before the big day. It was a wonderful evening.
