Happy Friday: Volume 9

Happy Friday!

It’s the weird week between Christmas and New Years and I don’t know if I should hibernate or be productive. I’m not even sure what day of the week it is, is it even Friday?

We have had a delightful few weeks. We had the most incredible time in Morocco. I don’t have enough words to describe to you how much we loved it. It was warm and sunny, the people were kind and helpful, and the food was delicious.

Christmas was quiet, we got home really late on Friday, and recovered from an 18-hour travel day on Saturday. Then we got ready for Christmas Eve. I have never been a huge Christmas person, but every year I love Christmas Eve a little more. I got my cinnamon rolls ready for Christmas morning, made an Italian feast, and we watched Christmas movies until bedtime. Christmas Day was more of the same. The kids let us sleep until 7:45 and we had such a relaxing and just nice all around day. I hope that yours was the same.

I’ve spent the week finishing some work and being lazy with the kids. We haven’t really had days where we’ve had nothing going on in a long time.

And now, we are riding out the government shutdown. (The Coast Guard is military but doesn’t get paid because their money comes from the Department of Homeland Security, not the Department of Defense which has been fully funded.) This space is not the place for politics, I really don’t like when people yell at me and send me really mean emails. But, I am going to mention that shutdowns do more than stall bills. They have financial consequences for real people.

For us specifically, we will be fine and can manage. There are a lot of others (800,00 government workers are not being paid until the budget passes) that are not in the same position. Yes, we will get paid eventually, but that doesn’t do much when you have a mortgage due or need to pay for daycare. Or just live your life. I’ve read some horrible comments today blaming people for being financially irresponsible, that isn’t fair or necessarily even the case. These people go to work every day and they should get paid. Simple as that. It put me in a bad mood.

I’m off my soapbox now. Sorry about that, I’m just annoyed and frustrated.

I hope that you have a wonderful New Years. I’m looking forward to 2019.

To combat my bad mood, I read every post on this account. If it doesn’t make you feel better about that world, I don’t know what will.

Broke after Christmas? Here are some ways to make it better.

This is the BEST news I’ve heard in a while. When it comes out you know where I’ll be for the month that it takes me to get through it.

One Day in December by Josie Silver. This was exactly what I needed to read right now. It was a delight. I read it in one day and loved it.
