How to Crack a Coconut

how to crack a coconutUsing fresh coconut really does make a difference sometimes, but I was always afraid of cracking it open. Turns out, it was no big deal. My store had easy-crack coconuts, but it did not really make a difference.

Here goes:

1. Use a clean nail and using a hammer, poke three holes in the eyes of the coconut. Pour the water into a measuring cup.

2. Put the coconut in a 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes. Wrap the coconut in a towel and give it a nice whack with a hammer or mallet.

3. Separate the flesh from the shell. Mine sort of popped out, but certain spots needed a little help from a knife to release.

4. Make gorgeous shavings using a vegetable peeler.

  • Did u bake the flesh on its own or the whole thing. It is so uniform in size. Beautiful. Do u think it will make a difference if it the store bought coconut flakes.

    • I baked the whole coconut to open it. Then I used a vegetable peeler to shave the flesh, then I toasted that in the oven. I think that you could absolutely use store bought coconut, but you will not get the delicate flavor of fresh.
