Homemade Iced Americano

Have you ever bought a Starbucks Iced Americano and thought to yourself, “how do I make it like this at home”? If yes, you’re not the only one! As a coffee lover, I fell in love with the beverage, and started looking to get the exact Starbucks Iced Americano finish.

I have been a coffee drinker for many years, and have replicated most of Starbucks’ fancy recipes at home, like my famous version of their Irish cream cold brew or their pumpkin cream cold brew. But sometimes what I really crave is a simple Starbucks Iced  Americano.

The americano has been my go-to drink for a couple of reasons. For one, with minimal additional ingredients, I love that the emphasis is on the coffee beans to provide all of the depth and flavor. But more importantly it is very easy and quick to make and just what you need before you start a hectic work day.

What is an Iced Americano //

Iced americano is similar to iced coffee – the difference comes down to the preparation method. Unlike iced coffee, which is made using hot brewed coffee, iced americanos are made using espresso shots.

Is Iced Americano stronger than Iced Coffee //

An iced americano is usually considered stronger than an iced coffee because it is made with espresso shots. Meanwhile an iced coffee can be made using any method and the coffee is brewed over time.

Is Iced Americano healthy

An iced americano is one of the healthiest caffeinated drinks. A glass of iced americans only contains about 15 calories since it is only made of espresso and water

Is an Iced Americano sweet

An iced americano is not typically sweet. However you can add sugar, sweetener or a flavored sugar syrup to make it sweet.

Iced Americano Ingredients //

As there are only a handful of ingredients in this Iced Americano recipe, it won’t take you long to source everything you need!

  • Espresso – 3 shots
  • Cold water – ⅔ cups
  • Ice – 1 cup

That’s right – even at Starbucks, their iced americanos consist of only these three ingredients. This makes it the ideal choice for vegans and those of you who prefer a deep coffee flavor over the sweetness of milk products and flavored syrups.

How to Make an Espresso Using an Espresso Machine //

As a coffee enthusiast, I often find instant coffee doesn’t quite hit the spot. That’s why I have my espresso machine ready to provide that higher-quality finish.

It’s very easy and convenient to make an Iced Americano using your machine at home. Simply prepare your espresso as normal, dispensing three espresso shots into the mug and afterwards just fill it with ⅔ cup cold water. Follow on with a healthy portion of ice on top, to finish off.

Recipe Tips

  • Don’t let your espresso shots cool down too much, the iced americano will be better if you prepare it as soon as it is brewed.
  • Depending on your preference (and the strength of the coffee you use), you may want to use more or less water to achieve the right taste.

Variations //

While the Iced Americano is known and loved for its simple composition, there is a huge range of products that you can add to bring a little extra personalization:

  • Sugar or an artificial sweetener
  • Flavored syrup
  • A splash of cream or milk
  • Dairy-free alternative like almond, soya or coconut milk

If, like me, you enjoy a visit to Starbucks, you’ll know that you can add flavors. Caramel, brown sugar, or hazelnut can all bring an extra dimension to your Starbucks iced americano recipe.
