This might look like a plain white cake, but inside there is a surprise. Are you ready for it?
You guys, I knew that Amanda was crazy creative and talented, but really – this book blew my mind. How she came up with so many different ways to put things inside of cake is nothing short of amazing. My children have flipped through this book many times over the last few days and ooh and ahh every time. Sidenote, they also like to remind me that I never thought to put a candle inside a pumpkin cake. Or anything inside a cake for that matter.
This book shares step-by-step images so that you can make these amazing cakes too. There are lots of gorgeous pictures (most step-by-step) and lots of detailed instructions. Whether you are a brand new baker, or have been baking for years, you can make these cakes and impress all of your friends and family.
And even cooler, she has a brand spankin’ new class on Craftsy. I love a Craftsy class, and I cannot wait to watch Amanda make some cakes. I have been lucky enough to watch her make a rose cake in person, and that girl knows her way around a piping bag. Her double piping bag trick changed my life when I was decorating cookies this Christmas.
I decided to make a variation of the Maypole Cake in the book. I wanted something that was simple to make but has serious wow factor. And wow it does.
I made two boxes of cake mix and baked them in 9-inch cake pans. I cooled them, and then froze them for a few hours. I cut each layer in half. You will have one extra layer. Snack time!
Now, I am sure Amanda is probably a pro at even layers, but I am not. But maybe the biggest surprise is that it didn’t really matter. Lopsided cake tastes just as good as even cake does, promise.
I added a generous layer of colored frosting in between each cake layer. Then I gave it a thin crumb coat and froze it for about an hour or so. It makes frosting so much easier. After the thin layer has chilled, I then frost it completely.
When you slice into the plain white cake and a stack of beautiful colors land on your plate how can you be anything but happy? Seriously, how pretty is the inside of this cake?
