Skip the Starbucks line and make a Homemade Iced Americano instead.

I’ve been a coffee drinker for many years, and you’ll frequently find me sampling all manner of creative menu items from local cafés. I’m happy to report that I’ve recreated many of my favorite café drinks at home—everything from Irish cream cold brew to pumpkin cream cold brew. But sometimes, I find myself craving something simpler and no-frills. Enter an iced Americano. It’s fast, easy, and always hits the spot.

An iced Americano doesn’t hide behind any syrups or fancy foam. The depth and flavor come entirely from the coffee beans, which means every sip reflects their quality. When poured over ice and topped with cold water, espresso tastes smoother and lighter, with less bite. Making this drink at home couldn’t be easier. Three shots of espresso, cold water, and a handful of ice are all you need; it’s the perfect way to kick off a hectic work morning.

Origin of the Americano

The Americano gained popularity during World War II, when American soldiers stationed in Italy found espresso too strong for their taste. To make it more palatable, they diluted it with hot water, creating a drink closer to the drip coffee they were familiar with back home. This was dubbed the “Americano.”

Over the years, the Americano has become a coffeehouse staple, and today, it’s commonly served iced as well as hot. If you find iced coffee to be too weak or sour, try an iced Americano instead. It tends to be smoother with that signature espresso depth.

Ingredients for Homemade Iced Americano: espresso in a white cup, ice cubes in a tall glass, and an empty glass.

How do I store leftovers?

An iced Americano is best enjoyed fresh. If you have some leftover, you can refrigerate it in a sealed container for up to 24 hours. Don’t store your leftover drink with ice in it; the ice will melt and further dilute the flavor. Add fresh ice cubes when you’re ready to enjoy.

Serving suggestions

Pair your iced Americano with anything you’d normally enjoy your coffee with at breakfast time. For something sweet, try this Easy Croissant Bread Pudding or these Apple Turnovers. If you want something a bit lighter to start your day, try these Yogurt Parfaits. Not a big fan of sweets? Some easy Sunny-Side-Up Eggs and Thick-Cut Bacon are always a hit.
