Ditch the ready-made packets and make your own Pot Roast Seasoning.

Pot roast is one of those comfort foods that I strongly associate with my grandmother. While images of a grandmother who loves to bake and cook may come to mind, that was not my grandmother! She had been a working mom, retired in Florida, and really only cooked when she needed to. However, she nailed pot roast. Almost every time we rolled in after a long drive, that characteristic homey aroma would greet us, along with her hugs. Soon after arriving, we’d dig in, and it always tasted great.

While I don’t have my grandmother’s recipe, I have been guilty of grabbing one of those ready-made packets of pot roast seasoning in a pinch. However, homemade seasoning is an economical, healthy, and versatile alternative. The packets are convenient but full of preservatives and often overly salty. When you make your own, you can customize not only the salt level but the overall flavor as well.

You will love having pot roast seasoning on hand, not only for pot roasts but also for hamburgers and meatloaf. Stored in a mason jar or airtight container, you can keep it on hand for up to six months. It’s quick to assemble, and you can adjust the proportions to suit your family’s tastes.

The Secret Ingredient

While all the seasonings and aromatics work together, there is one that is the secret ingredient, and it may surprise you. It’s brown sugar! While brown sugar might not normally come to mind as a pot roast ingredient, it has an important role to play. At just a teaspoon, the brown sugar does not make the roast overly sweet. It does, however, help create a beautifully browned crust on the pot roast. The sugar caramelizes easily and browns up quickly. This not only looks and tastes great, but also helps seal in the natural moisture of the pot roast.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Pot roast seasoning is a perfect pantry staple to keep on hand. Simply store in a mason jar or airtight container in a cool, dry place. Moisture is the enemy here. Keeping the mixture dry will ensure that it stays fresh for up to 6 months when stored properly. Refrigeration and freezing are not recommended.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar

Instructions
 

  • In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients.
    Dried herbs and spices in a bowl for baking or seasoning.
  • Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are well blended.
