I was always intimidated to cook fish. It seemed so delicate and I was worried I would overcook it and turn it to mush. Then, the internet happened.

Soon, I learned what to do and what not to do and, as is the case with most things, once you learn about something, you are no longer intimidated by it.

A perfect example is this rainbow trout. Rainbow trout is a fresh-water fish. Its meat is flaky with a mild, nutty taste. It boasts a vibrant color (hence the name) and can be found throughout North America, making it readily available for those of you stateside. Despite being flaky, it is easy to prepare; just follow these instructions and soon, you’ll be setting down on your dinner table an elegant meal!

Variations

This trout recipe is fairly simple, which gives you lots of room to experiment with added ingredients and crusts. Give them a try!

Almond-Crusted Trout: Mix some crushed almonds with breadcrumbs and whichever herbs and spices you like. Dip the trout in beaten egg, then coat them with the mixture. Add it to the pan and sear it until the crust is golden brown.

Cajun-Spiced Trout: Want fish with a bit of kick? Make a Cajun blend with paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and thyme. Rub it all over the trout, then pan-sear it until cooked through. For a side, I would suggest a creamy coleslaw or a spicy remoulade sauce.

Asian-Inspired Trout: Combine soy sauce, ginger, garlic, honey, and a splash of sesame oil. Marinate the trout in the mixture for about 30 minutes, then add it to the pan. Serve with steamed jasmine rice and stir-fried vegetables.

Mediterranean-Style Trout: Inject a taste of the Med by seasoning the trout with dried oregano, basil, thyme, and lemon zest. Pan-sear the trout until it’s flaky and lightly browned. To keep the theme going, serve with this Mediterranean salad or rice and a dollop of tzatziki sauce.

Serving Suggestions

I tend to pair my fish dishes with something light so as not to overpower them. Here are some suggestions:

Homemade Scalloped Potatoes: This is an easy one to prepare and tastes incredible. It is hearty and pairs well with most fish dishes, including this one.

Easy Oven-Roasted Garlic: There is already garlic in the dish, so why not roast some and have it on the side?

Cucumber and Tomato Salad: A refreshing salad that, because it is nice and simple, won’t overshadow the trout.

Crockpot Potato Soup: Why go for vegetables when you can make a soup (of vegetables)? As this is a Crockpot recipe, all you need to do is set it up and let it do its thing while you tend to the trout. Easy!

FAQs

My trout is dry, what am I don’t wrong?

With trout, you should err on the side of undercooking rather than overcooking. Even when it is underdone, trout is tasty. Plus, it will keep cooking after it is removed from the heat.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes, you can just use olive oil if you would like to. Just be aware that the butter thickens the sauce and makes it more flavorful.

Can I make this the day before?

Fish is not a great one to prepare the day before, as it can dry out. With fish, the fresher the better.

How to Store Delicious Trout

Let the trout cool completely. If you plan on eating it within the next 4 days, you can store it in the fridge. Just wrap it tightly in plastic or store it in an airtight container. If you plan on keeping it longer, you can freeze the fish for up to 3 months. Wrap it in plastic then store it in an airtight container.

When you would like to eat it, let the fish thaw in the fridge overnight. You can then pan sear, bake, or grill it to an internal temperature of 145°F. Note that the texture of the fish will change if frozen.
