This Gluten-Free Apple Crisp captures the essence of fall in every bite!

Gluten-Free Apple Crisp served on a white plate with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Especially in the cooler autumn months, when the temperature starts to drop at night and the summer heat begins to loosen its grip, there’s nothing quite like a freshly baked apple dessert. While apple pie might be the ubiquitous American treat, it takes a long time to make, what with the double crusts, and if you’re eating gluten-free, it’s not a good option (there is flour in the filling and in the crusts!).

Gluten-free apple crisp is the answer. You get the warm, spiced apple filling and a topping that is delicious and gluten-free. You won’t miss the crust! In fact, gluten-free apple crisp might just become a favorite treat any time of the year.

You will love gluten-free apple crisp because it is a simple, nearly foolproof recipe that delivers big flavor every time. Since cinnamon is used in the filling, this crisp smells amazing while it’s baking. The streusel-like crumble on the top seals in the wonderful apple juices that bubble up while the crisp bakes and provides a crispy contrast to the soft filling. Served with vanilla ice cream, this dessert will get rave reviews.

Ingredients for Gluten-Free Apple Crisp: diced apples, gluten-free oats, almond flour, brown sugar, melted butter, and spices.

Is There A Best Apple Variety To Use?

For gluten-free apple crisp, the answer is yes, but you’ve got options. In general, you want to use apples that hold their shape when baking without getting mushy. A vibrant, sweet-tart flavor is a plus as well. With those criteria in mind, apple varieties like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Sweet Tango, or Pink Lady all work well. If you’re buying or picking apples at an apple orchard, ask what variety they would recommend. It will vary by time of year and location.

FAQs & Tips

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days, though bear in mind that the topping will soften. You can also freeze it, assembled but unbaked, for up to 2 months. Thaw it overnight in the fridge before baking it.

How Can I Make This Nut-Free?

While almond flour is a fantastic product for gluten-free baking, if you are also dealing with a nut allergy, you cannot use it. Replace it with an equal amount of brown rice flour to make the crisp nut-free.

How Can I Make This Vegan?

Converting gluten-free apple crisp to a vegan recipe is a snap. Simply swap out the melted butter with an equal amount of plant-based butter. Then follow the instructions as directed.

Serving Suggestions

Homemade gluten-free apple crisp tastes amazing when it’s cooled slightly and served alongside a scoop of Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Homemade Whipped Cream is also a great accompaniment. You can also serve it with Vegan Whipped Cream. Caramel and apples go together nicely as well. Serve the crisp with a jar of Homemade Caramel Sauce to drizzle over the top for that added touch of sweetness and fall flavor.
