Sometimes, simple is best. Baked apple slices, for instance, require very little time and few ingredients, but they are super versatile. Need a gluten-free dessert? Baked apple slices are basically the filling for apple pie without the flour or crust. All the yummy goodness without gluten! Baked apple slices also add a great fall vibe to a breakfast of plain yogurt, granola, pancakes, or oatmeal.

You have probably heard about (or eaten) baked apples—whole apples that are cored and seasoned with cinnamon, sugar, and butter before baking. They look beautiful when they come out of the oven! I like to think of these traditional baked apples as a nice formal suit hanging in my closet. It’s sharp-looking and reserved for special occasions. Baked apple slices, on the other hand, are more versatile, like a classic white t-shirt that can be dressed up or down, is easy and comfortable, yet can be crisp and clean when you need it to be. Baked apple slices are like that—versatile, easy, and delicious.

Regardless of how you choose to serve these baked apple slices, the tart and sweet flavors of the apples, enhanced by the cinnamon, nutmeg, and honey, make for the perfect bite. And even though the apple slices soften as they bake, they don’t turn to mush; I recommend you use varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Jonagold, to get a nice texture after baking.

Ingredients for Baked Apple Slices: sliced apples, butter, honey, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and whipped cream.

Is Cornstarch Really Gluten-Free?

Baked apple slices make for a delightful, naturally gluten-free dessert, and using cornstarch to thicken the apple juices is a perfect alternative to flour. Pure cornstarch is derived solely from the endosperm of corn, meaning it contains no gluten. For those with heightened sensitivity, it’s wise to choose brands that explicitly label their product as gluten-free to avoid any risk of cross-contamination during processing. This ensures that your dessert not only has a luxuriously thick texture but also meets the dietary needs of anyone following a gluten-free lifestyle.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Cool leftovers and store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat them on low in a saucepan on your stove or in the microwave. Freezing is not recommended.

Serving Suggestions

If you’re serving baked apple slices in the morning, you can enjoy them with oatmeal, granola, plain yogurt, or Overnight Chia Pudding. These baked apple slices are also a delicious topping for Cinnamon Bun Pancakes or these Homemade Buttermilk Pancakes. If you’re going to enjoy them as part of a dessert, Whipped Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream, or Salted Spiced Caramel Sauce all taste delicious on top.
