Craving a breakfast you can customize and change up everyday? Instant Pot Oatmeal is perfect for you–healthy, creamy, and much better than store-bought!
I’m not sure about you, but growing up I almost always ate a bowl of oatmeal in the morning before school. But after a while, I grew bored of the same old cinnamon oatmeal instant packets from the grocery store. I took a long break from oatmeal as an adult, but I have to admit that I’m back to being an oatmeal lover! I love how I can add whatever toppings I’m in the mood for. When summer fruits are in season, I like to throw in a handful of raspberries and banana slices. During the fall, I’m adding apples and pomegranate seeds. Not a fan of those fruits? Don’t worry! Try adding some coconut shavings, sliced almonds, or pumpkin seeds.
Oatmeal is fun to make because I don’t have to constantly watch the pot while it’s cooking. I can go about my day and take care of all the other things I need to do (dishes, folding laundry, responding to emails…) My Instant Pot is such a game-changer and I highly recommend buying one if you don’t have one already! You can make oatmeal without an Instant Pot, however I prefer the hands-off method of cooking! Get ready for breakfasts to be quick, easy, and delicious!
I love this recipe because it’s creamy and not too mushy or lumpy. Sometimes the texture of oatmeal is off-putting, but I guarantee that this Instant Pot Oatmeal has a really nice texture and taste. The rolled oats will give your bowl of oatmeal added creaminess. Avoid instant oats for this specific recipe, but more on that later. I also love how I can change up the kind of milk– 2%, skim, almond, soy, etc–whatever your milk preference is, you can make a tasty bowl of oatmeal!
Looking for more Instant Pot recipes? You don’t have to just use it for oatmeal. There’s a thousand different things you can make with an Instant Pot, like popcorn, or something a bit more savory such as carrot curry soup.
Types of Oats
Keep in mind that there are a few different types of oats and it does matter which one you use! Here’s a brief overview of commonly used oats.
- Steel-cut: Slightly chewy, take longer to cook than rolled oats, less processed. Steel-cut oats look like little pieces of rice.
- Rolled
- Old-fashioned: A lot of texture! Recommend for this recipe!
- Quick-cooking: Thin, smooth texture.
- Instant: These are the oats in microwave oatmeal packets. They are usually pre-cooked and pre-sweetened.
Old-fashioned oats can be found at most grocery stores and are the best oats for this recipe. You can also use quick-cooking oats, but stay away from instant oats unless you want to make oatmeal in the microwave.

FAQs & Tips
Oatmeal is a great food to make ahead and store for later! After the oatmeal has cooled, portion out the oatmeal into air-tight containers (or plastic bags) and store in the fridge for up to 4 days. Alternatively, you can freeze the oatmeal for up to 6 months. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of milk or water.
Yes! Oats contain fiber and whole-grains, which are great for your digestive system.
If you have a sweet tooth, try adding honey, maple syrup, chocolate chips, or cinnamon sugar for a slightly sugary bowl of oatmeal.
Flaxseeds are small seeds from the flax plant and are a great source of fiber! They are a great addition to oatmeal.
